2014 has come and gone, and it's been a year for the record books for murders in Newburgh... but for a good reason.

Believe it or not, there was only one homicide that took place in Newburgh last year. Yup, just one. The Times Herald Record reports that a shooting near Mount Saint Mary College just a few days into January of 2014 was the only reported homicide of the year.

This is the lowest number of murders in the City of Newburgh since 2007, and a sharp decline from 2010 when 11 people were killed in a brutal year of gang violence and retaliation. 2012 and 2013 saw 5 people murdered each year.

For a city that has a reputation for violent crime this is a great improvement, but it's not all good. Shootings overall were up for 2014, with 48 people falling victim to gun violence. Although the shootings didn't result in death it's still a sign that violence remains a major problem for Newburgh.
