Funding for Zero-Emission Buses and Charging Infrastructure

New York State is making significant strides in reducing transportation pollution and improving air quality through the New York School Bus Incentive Program (NYSBIP). Recently, an additional $200 million was allocated for school districts and bus operators to purchase zero-emission school buses and install necessary charging infrastructure. This funding, part of the historic $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, is crucial for transitioning public schools to cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.

Affordable and Healthier Transportation for Students

The NYSBIP not only aims to reduce harmful emissions but also makes it financially feasible for schools to transition to zero-emission buses. By replacing traditional gas and diesel buses with electric alternatives, schools can protect the health and well-being of students and the local community. The initiative also supports the development of customized fleet electrification plans, ensuring that the adoption of zero-emission technologies is both practical and affordable for all public schools.

Incentives and Support for Schools

Administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the program offers various incentives. These include covering up to 100% of the incremental costs of new or re-powered zero-emission buses and providing vouchers for Level 2 or DCFC fast chargers. Additionally, larger funding amounts are available for high-need districts and disadvantaged communities. Since the program's launch, over 75 school districts have applied for funds, with more than 250 districts developing fleet electrification plans.

A Greener Future for New York

New York's commitment to clean transportation is a key component of its broader climate agenda. The state is investing nearly $3 billion in clean transportation initiatives, supporting the transition to a zero-emission future. Through NYSBIP and other efforts, New York is leading the way in creating healthier, more sustainable environments for future generations.
