We Asked: What’s the Hudson Valley’s Favorite Game Show to Watch?

I am a huge fan of game shows. They are fun, they are light, you can play along at home, and you can get into them at any time without having to know any background on any of the characters. I don't need to binge 4 seasons to understand how the show works.

One of my favorite shows, Survivor, returns tomorrow. Some people say that doesn't count as a game show, and it is more of a reality show, but I say since they are playing for one million dollars, it counts.

Growing up Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader was a huge hit in my house. My dad and I were big Jeff Foxworthy fans, so that really helped to capture our attention.

Another show I like to watch is Holey Moley on ABC in the summers. It's essentially extreme mini golf. Imagine putting Wipeout, America Ninja Warrior, and mini golf together. I think the show is a lot of fun. It's silly and just the thing that I want on a nice summer night.

All year round, of course, I love to watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. I'll purposely time cooking dinner to that I'll be done to watch the shows starting at 7pm while eating.

I was curious, so I had to ask: what is the Hudson Valley's favorite game show to watch. Some answers didn't surprise me at all, and a few caught me off guard.

8) Match Game

IMDb says, "The five-day-a-week syndicated successor to the popular CBS game show, where two could compete to match fill-in-the-blank phrases with those of the celebrities." The show began in 1962 and has had several runs throughout the decades. Match Game has been hosted by Gene Rayburn, Ross Shafer, and Michael Burger. The latest incarnation saw Alec Baldwin as the host from 2016 to 2021.

7) Card Sharks

IMDb says, "contestants are asked questions about how 100 people answered a poll question then played a card game where they tried to guess whether the next card drawn from a deck in a sequence would be higher or lower." Hosts for the show have included Jim Perry, Bob Eubanks, Bill Raferty, Pat Bullard and most recently Joel McHale.

6) Remote Control

According to IMDb, "A trio of contestants answer questions and compete in games related to TV and pop culture." The show was hosted by Ken Ober and announced by Colin Quinn.

5) America Says

A Game Show Network original, John Michael Higgins hosts the game where contestants try to guess the top answers that American have answered to fill-in-the-blank survey questions covering a large variety of topics.

4) The Price is Right

"Come on down!" It's no surprise that TV's longest running game show made the list somewhere! The show was hosted by the legendary Bob Barker until 2007, and then was picked up by comedian and actor Drew Carey, and he's been hosting the show since. The show offers a variety of games and puzzles, but all with the same basic challenge: guess the price of the retail items shown.

3) The Hustler

Going from one of the longest running game show to one of our newest and shortest game shows, we have The Hustler. Started in 2021, The Hustler is hosted by comedian and former The Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson. The show breaks the game show mold by featuring one player who secretly already knows the answers. Each episode follows five contestants as they collaborate to answer a series of trivia questions, with the goal of building a collective prize pot that increases with each correct answer. But one of the five contestants, the "hustler," already knows the answers but must keep everything a secret to have a shot at winning the grand prize. Two contestants are anonymously eliminated by the hustler, leaving three remaining contestants who must collectively decide who they think the hustler is. If they are right, they share the prize. But if the two contestants are wrong, the hustler wins it all.

2) Family Feud

It's our man, Steve Harvey! In this fan favorite game show, two teams of five members are pitted against each other. Each teams's goal is to guess the results of audience survey questions. A player from each team initially faces off, answering the question to earn the chance to either pass or play. The winning family gets a chance to earn extra cash in a bonus round. Family Feud  has been on and off the air since 1976, but has been running strong since 2012. The show has been hosted by Richard Dawson, Ray Combs, Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, John O'Hurley, and most recently, Steve Harvey.

1) Jeopardy

What is Jeopardy for $1000? Jeopardy  has taken our top spot as the Hudson Valley's favorite game show. Created by Merv Griffin, the show is a quiz competition that reverses the traditional question-and-answer format of many quiz shows. The show has been on since 1964. Art Fleming was the original host, but the late great Alex Trebek became synonymous with the role as host until he passed away. Hosting duty is currently being shared between actor Mayim Bialik, known for roles on Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, and former Jeopardy Champion and highest-earning American game show contestant Ken Jennings.
