Epic: Remember When This Guy Climbed Niagara Falls?
Every time I think we've run out of records to set, another adventure shows up and says "hold my beer".
There have been quite a few world records in the Hudson Valley. From the worlds largest lawn gnome to the longest Hokey-Pokey line, there are at least eight entries into the Guinness Book of World Records that were set in our corner of New York (see them all here). The daredevil ice climb, however, happened a bit further north...
Ice Climbing Niagara Falls in New York
There have only been two people to ice climb Niagara Falls, and they both did it on one fateful day in January of 2015. While Will Gadd and Sarah Hueniken had their share of obstacles, nothing was going to stand in the way of their mission. From Niagara Falls Adventures:
After 2 years of preparation, jumping through hoops to get permission, and waiting for the perfect ice conditions, they were finally able to begin their ascent alongside Horseshoe Falls... Climbing just beside 2,509 tons of force in these icy and slippery conditions is not easy. Nevertheless, after an hour of determination, Gadd and Hueniken became the first and only people to achieve this amazing feat.
The Dangers of Ice Climbing Niagara Falls
While the height of the falls may not have been intimidating for professional climbers, the conditions certainly were. With the falls only partially frozen, the adventurers were mere feet away from one of the most powerful forces of nature in the world. Check out the video about the climb below.
After the hoops they needed to jump through, it's doubtful if any other person will be granted a permit in the future to recreate what Will Gadd and Sarah Hueniken accomplished nine years ago... but it that really necessary? Here's to celebrating the one day in history when two human beings were able to be a literal part of the biggest waterfall on our planet. Check out some more world records below.
