Yes, this weekend was brutally cold, but it really could have been worse.

It is being called a polar vortex and it has the temperatures in the Hudson Valley lower than they have been in years. Thankfully, not as cold as it was farther upstate.

According to the Daily News, Whiteface Mountain, which is near Lake Placid, had record breaking temperatures on Saturday into Sunday.

The Wild Center recorded the temperature with the wind chill at the summit of Whiteface mountain at a bone numbing -114 degrees late Saturday and into Sunday.

Tracey Legat is the communications manager for the center and she told the Daily News,

“The mountains of the Adirondacks are often some of the coldest places in the lower 48 states during the year.”

And believe it or not, the mountain’s summit was actually colder than Antarctica on Sunday according to the National Weather Service.

So, again, it can always be worse.
