As someone who spent nearly a decade working in the supermarket industry, I can say with absolute certainty that there are not many things, if any at all that are more important in than food safety.

From the manufacturers to the warehouses, to the supermarkets where the vast majority of Americans buy their food on a daily basis, food safety is taken exceptionally seriously.

Because of this necessity for safety with food when recalls are announced, everyone and I mean EVERYONE, is notified as soon as possible to make sure that no customers are not able to buy products that are or are potentially contaminated.

Supermarket giant Trader Joe's is currently in the middle of this process as a recent recall is having the company as well as customers rush to check their freezers.

Trader Joe's Massive Frozen Recall

This most recent recall is for a well-known item found on Trader Joe's frozen food shelves, the Trader Joe's brand chicken soup dumplings. According to the announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the recall is specifically for the 6-oz. boxes with plastic trays containing six pieces of “TRADER JOE’S Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings”.

The packages are easily identifiable as they were produced on December 7, 2023, and have the corresponding lot codes which can be found on the side of the boxes. Those lot codes are “03.07.25.C1-1” and “03.07.25.C1-2”.

The recall was issued by CJ Foods Manufacturing Beaumont Corporation, an establishment that distributes Trader Joe's products out of Beaumont, California. The recall was issued because it's possible that some of these dumplings may be contaminated with "...foreign materials, specifically hard plastic from a permanent marker pen".

The most astonishing part of this recall announcement is the sheer number of dumplings this recall applies to.

Thousands of Dumplings and What to do with them

In total, the recall applies to over 61,000 pounds (61,839 pounds to be exact) of the Trader Joe's Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings.

CJ Foods Manufacturing was first made aware of the issue when they received complaints and reports from customers about finding the hard plastic in their dumplings. Fortunately at this point in time, there have been no reports of adverse reactions or injuries from the products.

As for customers who may have these dumplings at home in their freezer, the FSIS is urging customers to either throw the product(s) away or return them to the store where they were purchased from.
