New Dutchess County K9 Brings Vital Tool to Sheriff’s Office
Dutchess County Sheriff Introduces New K9
Earlier this week, The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office introduced a new K9 to their department.
Meet Bear, a 16-month-old Black Lab that will be joining the force and he will be bringing a unique skill to the team.
His skills will be used to help local law enforcement catch child predators.
K9 Bear Brings Unique Electronic Detection Skill to Dutchess County
According to a statement released by the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, Bear is an Electronic Detection K9.
What does that mean exactly? They explain "ESD K9s are a vital tool being deployed throughout the Country to assist Law Enforcement agencies to catch child predators, human trafficking and combat other computer-related crimes."
Bear is certified in detecting "the odor of the chemical component Triphenylphosphine Oxide (TPPO) which is used in the manufacturing of electronics to prevent overheating."
The newest K9 was trained by Jordan Detection K9's where he learned to "locate hidden electronics such as smart phones, hard drives, thumb drives, cameras, GPS devices and micro-SD cards."
The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office adds that Bear's detection skills will be used in the execution of search warrants for a "less intrusive and more target search of electronics."
Not only that, but Bear has been cross trained as a "comfort support dog for victims/children, and will also serve as a wellness dog for members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and Community."
Therapy Dogs Added to Some New York Agencies
Just like Bear, there are many dogs who are trained in providing comfort and support.
Recently, the Ulster County 911 Communications Team added their first ever therapy dog to the team. Oliver the Goldendoodle is currently in training and once he completes the course he will join the team providing therapy for critical incident stress management "following particular challenging calls or events.
