Kingston is mourning the passing of a beloved detective.

It sad day in Kingston, NY as we have just learned of the passing of one of the Kingston Police Department's more beloved detectives according to a post on the police department's Facebook page. The post said, "It is with deep sadness that the Kingston Police Department announces the untimely passing of retired Detective Gerald "Tuffy" Schatzel."

Kingston Detective Gerald "Tuffy" Schatzel

Detective Gerald "Tuffy" Schatzel was a part of the Hudson Valley law enforcement community for many years as he started his career with the Town of Lloyd Police Department and was hired as a patrolman by the Kingston Police Department (KPD) in 1990. Eight years later "Tuffy" was promoted to the rank of Detective in 1998 and retired honorably in 2011 after serving the Kingston community for over 20 years. During his time as Detective “Tuffy” managed many serious and difficult cases according to KPD.

The police department didn't share any other information regarding Detective Schatzel's passing but did share the funeral arrangements which we have listed below. As news of Detective Schatzel's passing began to spread many in the Kingston area shared their condolences online with many sharing a blue and black badge honoring the late detective.

Detective Gerald Schatzel Funeral Arrangements

The calling hours are scheduled for Sunday, January 7th, 2024 from 2 p.m. until 6 p. and will take place at the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, at 27 Smith Ave, Kingston, N.Y. A mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, January 8, 2024, starting at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church, at 160 Broadway, Kingston, N.Y.
