New York State Troopers are mourning the loss of one of their own.

NYS Trooper Dies in Texas Helicopter Crash

On Friday, March 8th, 2024, New York State Trooper John M. Grassia III, died when the helicopter he was in crashed in Texas. The New York State Police Benevolent Association released a statement on Saturday, March 9th, and explained further:

The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association Board of Directors and staff send our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and coworkers of New York State Trooper John M. Grassia III, 30, who was killed on Friday in a helicopter crash while flying over the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas serving with the National Guard.

According to the New York State Trooper PBA, Trooper Grassia III joined the New York State Police in April 2022 and was recently assigned to Troop G.

New York State Troop G covers 10 counties including Albany, Fulton, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, and more.

Several New York agencies shared their condolences on social media, including this message from Columbia County 911 on Facebook:

 

NY Gov. Kathy Hochul Release Statement on NYS Trooper Death

On Sunday, March 10th, Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement in which she wrote: "I am deeply saddened at the passing of two members of the New York National Guard and a member of the New York State Police during a federal deployment along our southern border."

Gov. Hocul added:

There is no greater calling than service to and defense of your country. I join the members of our National Guard and State Police, and the entire State of New York, in mourning this tragic loss.

She went on to say "Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of those killed, and I remain incredibly grateful for the many service men and women who put themselves at risk every day to ensure the security of our state and our nation.”
