Who Can Apply Now to Take 2024 New York State Trooper Exam?

Ever wanted to become a New York State Trooper? Each year there are changes to the exam, from who can take it, to where you can take the actual exam. Think you have what it takes to be one? That is awesome. Keep reading to find out who can apply to take the exam.

When can you sign up to take the NYS Trooper exam in March 17, 2024?

You will need to sign up as early as October 23, 2023 to be able to take the next Trooper test. The last day that you can sign up and still take the next exam is March 4, 2024.

New York is trying to make taking the Trooper test more accessible to people across the state. In fact, New York has hired the Pearson VUE testing centers, of which New York has 60 of, to administer or proctor the examinations. You will need to sign up in advance to take the exam as walk-ins will not be allowed.

What is New York State doing to get more Trooper/ State Police applications?

The New York State Troopers are trying to broaden their candidate pool and are encouraging more candidates then ever before to apply from different and diverse backgrounds as well, including encouraging more female and minority applicants that ever before.

What is the New York State Trooper Tattoo Policy, has that changed?

Yes, the tattoo policy has changed. According to a NYS Police press release the tattoo policy is now:

Tattoos on the chest, back, or arms must be covered by wearing a properly fitted uniform shirt or business attire, with no portion of the tattoo showing. If any portion of the tattoo, brand, and/or body art is visible when wearing the short-sleeve summer uniform, the member must wear the long-sleeve uniform shirt, with a tie.

 

What are the requirements to become a New York State Trooper?

To sign up for the exam you need to be:

• US Citizen
• 20-34 years of age, but if you are active duty or former military, there are a few waivers based on how many years you have served.
• High school diploma or equivalent

What are the Salary and Benefits for New York State Police?

• Starting salary upon appointment to the academy: $59,612
• Minimum total compensation after one year of service is $98,300
• Full benefits & retirement
