Hudson Valley’s Most Notorious Road Now Closed for the Winter
One of the Hudson Valley's most scenic - and treacherous - roads has once again been closed for the season.
While winter weather in New York State can turn even the most boring strip of pavement into a challenge for drivers, some routes are worse than others. As the official website of Saugerties, NY put it when announcing the closure, "if you know the road, you know why".
Platte Clove Road Is Now Closed for the Season in Ulster County
The now-closed span of Platte Clove Road in Ulster County, which offers beautiful views alongside its many twists and turns, is a favorite route for nature-lovers and adventure-seekers looking to hike scenic trails like Huckleberry Point, Platte Clove Preserve, Devil's Path, and more.
Community Reacts to "Early" Closure of Platte Clove Road
The road is so well-known for it's less-than-desirable winter conditions that most community reactions bordered on relief rather than frustration. Still, locals who rely on the road to connect them to the town of Saugerties wondered why the decision was made without winter weather in the forecast.
"Adding 50 minutes a day to the round-trip commutes of people living in Platte Clove is money out of their pockets. With no snow on the ground and none in the forecast, and daytime temps still above freezing, this call bums me out". lamented one resident. The town of Hunter, NY's supervisor, however, stood firm with their decision.

"I understand your point of view, but the decision has already been made", Town of Hunter Town Supervisor Sean Mahoney wrote on Facebook. " My road had a dusting of snow and ice today, and as many know on the mountain, the weather can change in an instant. We would rather err on the side of caution."
