The action figure world has no shortage of Spider-Man toys, as the webslinger has been on shelves continually since the Mego era in the ‘70s. However, not all Spider-toys are created equal. For every figure you wouldn't mind your kid taking into the bath or on a play date, there is an opposing iteration that you’d rather keep secured in a windowed display case that children under the age of eight would have a hard time opening. That former category are the kind of Spider-Man figures these new Hot Toys pieces fall under.

Spider-Man’s a true New Yorker: he understands when to take the 6 train versus rolling the dice on the 2nd Avenue subway, he knows where to get the Bronx’s best chopped cheese, and when he needs a snack in a pinch, he hits up his friendly neighborhood bodega. In the latest promotional spot for the umpteenth reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming, the web-head is late to a big NBA Finals watching party at Tony Stark’s place. (The commercial was written to air specifically during the basketball playoffs this year.) But when he ducks into a nearby bodega — for those uninitiated, it’s really just a corner convenience store, but immeasurably better in every way — he has a chance encounter.

Spider-Man will have his official Marvel Homecoming in just a few weeks’ time, but the animated incarnation of our beloved wall-crawler is coming home as well. Meet the new animated Marvel’s Spider-Man, as a first clip sees the webhead going low-tech in a battle against the Scorpion.

Well would ya look at that – a major studio just hired a female director to helm a female superhero movie. Is this really 2017 or are we dreaming?

In news that clearly came from the farthest depths of left field, Tom Hardy has been cast as the lead in Venom, Sony’s upcoming film about the famous Spider-Man villain. That’s not all: Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will direct the movie, which is reportedly not a spinoff from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but a standalone project of sorts. Oh, and that’s still not all: Sony has shared an official announcement photo featuring Hardy in one of his classic Hardy-selfie poses, sporting a Venom t-shirt — in case you missed the point.

After failing to capture audiences with their last Spider-Man reboot, Sony found a surefire way to win us back by teaming up with Marvel. Thanks to that deal, not only do we get to see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker swing over to the MCU to play with the Avengers, we also get to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark pal around with everyone’s favorite high school hero in this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. And, as teased at the end of Civil War, being friends with a billionaire inventor / superhero has some serious benefits, like a free super-suit upgrade.

The deal between Marvel and Sony that allowed Peter Parker to join up with the Avengers is actually kind of extraordinary. More often than not — all the time, really — studios jealously hold tight to their superhero properties, often, as with Fantastic Four, making movies just so they can keep the rights. But Spider-Man allowed two studios to co-parent a character, allowing Spidey and other Avengers to ping-pong between movie universes, appearing in both. That deal seems like it may be up in the air after whatever follows Spider-Man: Homecoming.

This past weekend, fans from around the world flocked to the Javits Convention Center in New York City to attend the annual conference put on by the Toy Industry Association, Inc. In recent years, Toy Fair New York has become a hot spot for movie fans as well, with new action figures and toy sets offering first looks at the comic book adaptations of the following summer. One of the big hits of this year’s conference was Spider-Man: Homecoming, with a few new character designs and even a potential look at the film’s final battle.

While capes and cowls dominating the box office is the new phenomenon, video games are no stranger to awesome tales of superheroics.
