The Army has done it! They have, according to a press release, been able to create a pizza that can last for three years. More specifically, the pizza will have a shelf life of three years, inside a "MRE" or Meals-Ready-To-Eat.

The reason they even wanted to come up with such a thing in the first place? To help military members have something from 'home' while out fighting in the field.

The biggest factor that the research team had to overcome while creating the shelf stable pizza was how to keep it from growing mold on the crust. The creators used something called Hurdle Technology, which uses different types of layers in the crust build to inhibit mold growth. Another slight change that the lab had to make was to the pizza sauce itself, they had to make it more acidic to help preserve the pizza.

What does the final product taste like? One taste tester referred to it as 'cafeteria pizza like,' another saying it was more 'like day old cafeteria pizza'.
