Additional Information

The Essex Lacers, a group from New Jersey practice the centuries-old craft of bobbin lacemaking. You will want to attend this rare opportunity to see the art of making lace by hand using a cushion or pillow (hence its other name, "pillow lace") and a series of small sticks, called "bobbins", which hold the threads. The threads are crossed and twisted in a complex dance to weave the lace. The Essex Lacers have demonstrated for numerous historical societies, at antiques and craft shows, and for the National Park Service at the Jockey Hollow site of the Morristown National Historic Park and will be in the Hudson Valley for this one day. The Madam Brett Homestead, built in 1709 is Dutchess County oldest home. Plan an hour to tour the 17 rooms with 7-generations of Brett family artifacts.
