Easter isn't until March 31st, so we still have a few more weeks of Lent. And like every Friday of Lent, such as today, those who observe fast from meat. Fish; however, is still allowed. It simply meant abstaining from eating the flesh of warm-blooded animals—since the thinking goes, Jesus was a warm-blooded animal. Fish, though, which are cold blooded were considered okay to eat on fasting days.

This goes in line with how meat was classified in the 9th century. If it didn't traditionally bleed, it was not meat and was fair game. This effectively restricted faithful Christians from eating birds and mammals, though flexible definitions muddied this rule over time. That being said, let's take a look at enjoying some seafood in one of my favorite ways - Fish Tacos!

How to Define a "Fish Taco"

First of all, fish tacos are one of those meals that can be adapted in so many ways. "Fish" is such a general term. When you hear fish tacos, it's really covering a wide array of seafood. For instance, shrimp tacos and crab tacos fall under this category, while they are both technically crustaceans. When it comes to actual fish, it all depends on your interest and what is available!

You can go for some white-fleshed, mild saltwater fish like snapper, mahi-mahi, grouper, flounder, halibut or cod while making some Baja-styled tacos. Some favorite farmed freshwater fish include tilapia and catfish. Even the popularity of salmon tacos are on the rise! Salmon isn't a traditional filling, but with it's stronger flavor, it can stand up to spicy rubs as well as the charring heat of a grill.
