After a bad car crash in Dutchess County a Poughkeepsie man was charged with a felony DWI. Police say he then left the scene and was found after officers followed a trail of car wreckage.

New York State Police from the Poughkeepsie arrested 34-year-old John J. Plass III, of Poughkeepsie for aggravated driving while intoxicated, a class E felony.

Troopers were dispatched by Dutchess County 911 to Millbrook School Road for a one-car auto collision. An investigation revealed that Plass was operating a 2015 Chevrolet pick-up truck on Millbrook School Road when he drove off the road and into a tree.

Prior to the police arriving on scene, Plass fled the area traveling toward Bangall Amenia Road. Troopers followed a trail of car debris and engine oil to locate the heavily damaged pick-up truck.

Police allege an investigation revealed Plass was intoxicated. He was charged with felony DWI when a criminal history revealed a prior DWI related conviction from 2008.

Plass was also charged with 1st-degree leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a misdemeanor.

The defendant provided a breath sample that revealed a blood alcohol level of .18%. He was issued traffic tickets directing him to appear before the Town of Washington Court on April 12.
