An Orange County Jury found a Port Jervis man guilty of robbing his mother’s tenant.

According to the prosecution, on March 17, 2015, 33-year-old Shakeel Waller robbed a man who rented a room in a Port Jervis house owned by Waller’s mother. It was believed that Waller approached the victim in a common area of the house and demanded money. When the victim refused, Waller punched the victim in the face, knocking out one of his teeth, and stole $200.

In Orange County Court on Tuesday, Waller was found guilty of 2nd-degree robbery. He faces up to 15 years in prison. “Those who use violence to steal, even if they do not use a weapon, deserve lengthy prison sentences,” Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler said in a statement. “The evidence supports the jury’s determination that this defendant needlessly punched his much smaller victim in the face in order to steal his money. This crime is even more heinous since it occurred where the victim lived. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home.”

Waller was remanded to Orange County Jail without bail until sentencing. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on April 20.
