Drafted in 2012, Gavin Cecchini has had a fairly steady rise up the prospect ladder within the Mets organization, and generally ranks within the top 3-4 prospects in the minors. Last year he seemed to really put all the offensive skills together with the Binghamton Mets, where he went .317 with a .819 OPS. That's pretty good, considering the level of competition in the Eastern League.

He was promoted to Las Vegas and has continued his hot hitting into this season. So far, he's hitting .328 with a .854 OPS, with only 25 strike outs in 51 games. That's terrific. He'll never be a huge power hitter, but he'll get plenty of doubles with a few triples thrown in for some flair.

This last week was his best professional week, however. He hit .440, going 11 for 25, with 2 home-runs and 10 RBI's. He had SUCH a good week that he was named the Pacific Coast League "Player Of The Week".

The ONE thing about Gavin is the errors. He has 20 of them already this season. That's a lot. BUT, the cure for that might be a move to second base. If he's rushing or over-throwing to 1st base, a shift to second could cure a lot of that. I actually think that's what the Mets should consider doing. Move Neil Walker to third base and promote Gavin to the majors at 2nd. I know everyone thinks Dilson Herrera is the heir apparent at second, but he's had nowhere near the season Gavin has. Dilson recently hit .256 in his last 10 games.

As a matter of fact, if the trend continues with both players, I think the position will be Gavin's to lose at the end of the season.
