It's Christmas in August!

The MLB trade deadline has come and gone. The Mets seemed to be in on a few deals, made one deal with a player that failed a physical, and then had to re-work it to get the player they really wanted. They brought back a player they traded last offseason, and didn't get a catcher.

So! Who is going, who is leaving and who is staying?

Who is coming?

The Mets acquired: Jay Bruce from the Cincinnati Reds. They also brought back Jon "I don't like your infield defense" Niese.

Jay Bruce is a lefty outfielder, currently hitting .265 but leading the NL in RBI. In case you hadn't noticed, that's kind of where the Mets stink right now. In a big way. He's also only 2 behind the NL lead for home runs. Not a bad piece to have hitting right behind Cespedes.

Bruce is also signed for next year, and there's no way Cespedes sticks around. So, that's good.

Jon Niese was traded by the Mets last offseason to Pittsburgh for Neil Walker. They're bringing him back to be a lefty out of the bullpen.

Who is leaving? Dilson Herrera was traded to the Reds for Jay Bruce, along with Max Wotell.

Dilson was supposed to be the 2b of the future for the Mets, but he really hit the skids this season in Las Vegas. He was currently hitting around .270, which is just not good in a hitters friendly park and league. I've been talking about Gavin Cecchini being a higher prospect that him for awhile, and Gavin is hitting 40 points better than him currently.

Leaving with Dilson is Max Wotell, a 3rd round draft pick from last year. A lefty who is currently sitting on a 3.94 ERA. Don't let that ERA fool you; Max has the potential to be a VERY good pitcher.

Also leaving the team is Antonia Bastardo, for Jon Niese. If I'm honest, I kinda forgot he was on the team.

Who is staying? This is the big part. The original deal for Jay Bruce was Brandon Nimmo, Max Wotell and Chris Flexen.

I'm not sure he's going to be AWESOME, but I like watching Nimmo play baseball. Dude is always smiling, he throws himself around playing defense, and I think he's got a real chance to hit for some pop. I'd like to see him stick with the Mets and grow into the kind of player the Mets thought he was when they drafted him.

Chris Flexen is a 14th round draft pick currently playing in St. Lucie, with a 3.63 ERA. I think he can be a good back of the end rotation pitcher.

That being said, I'm sure teams asked for a whole bunch of top level prospects and the Mets didn't give any of them away. Amed Rosario, Dominic Smith, Thomas Szapucki, Harol Gonzalez, David Thompson, Gavin Cecchini, Robert Gsellman. They're all staying and I'm very happy about that.
