Police charged a man after they say he broke into a Dutchess County home, found car keys, and drove off with the homeowners 2014 Mercedes Benz.

New York State Police from the Wappinger charged 34-year-old Shawn M. Nesheiwat, of Hyde Park, with 2nd-degree burglary, 2nd-degree criminal mischief, 3rd-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and 3rd-burglary, all felonies.

According to State Police, on February 10th, authorities responded to a home in Wappinger for a reported burglary. The victims told police that their 2014 Mercedes Benz was missing from their detached garage. The car keys, which police were told was kept inside the home, were also missing.

Shortly after, troopers located the stolen car, vacant, in the Hudson Plaza parking lot. Police say the car had significant damage.

A detailed investigation by members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation led officials to allege that Nesheiwat was responsible for the theft of the car.

Nesheiwat was arraigned in Town of Wappinger Court and remanded to the Dutchess County jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. The defendant is due to reappear in the Wappinger Court on February 26.
