Expanding Opportunities for Local Children

New York State has announced a significant investment of approximately $100 million in grants aimed at enhancing afterschool programs across the state, benefiting nearly 40,000 children in high-need areas. In the Hudson Valley, 22 programs have been awarded a total of $12.3 million, underscoring the commitment to enriching the lives of local youth.

Supporting Affordable Child Care Initiatives

These grants, part of the Learning and Enrichment Afterschool Program Supports (LEAPS), are crucial for families in our region. The state’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) now supports 130,000 children, with eligible families typically paying no more than $15 per week for child care. This initiative aligns with the mission to make quality child care accessible and affordable for all families in the Hudson Valley.

Celebrating Lights on Afterschool

In conjunction with the 25th Annual Lights on Afterschool initiative, state officials from the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) visited local programs to see firsthand the positive impact these initiatives have on students. This event highlights the vital role afterschool programs play in providing safe environments for children to develop new skills and pursue creative outlets.

Enhancing Community Engagement

The LEAPS initiative not only provides funding but also aims to improve staff wages, fostering a robust environment for learning and development. Local leaders emphasize that afterschool programs in the Hudson Valley are essential in keeping youth engaged in healthy, productive activities.
