New York State has introduced a new initiative to support low-income families during the summer. Through the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (Summer EBT) program, the state is distributing $120 per child to eligible families to help cover the cost of healthy meals. Nearly $200 million in food assistance has already been issued to over 1.5 million children, with more benefits being sent out in the coming weeks.

Expanding Support to Millions

The state anticipates that approximately 2 million children will qualify for this assistance. While many eligible families have already received their benefits, more assistance is available, and New Yorkers are encouraged to apply before the September 3 deadline. This program is part of a broader effort to address food insecurity and support working families.

How the Program Works

Summer EBT is a federally funded initiative aimed at reducing food insecurity among children from low-income families. Families of eligible children receive the $120-per-child benefit on an EBT card, which can be used like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. These funds can be spent on nutritious food like fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy at authorized retailers, including farmers markets.

Who is Eligible?

Most children eligible for SNAP, Temporary Assistance, or Medicaid automatically receive the Summer EBT benefits. Other families may apply if their child attends a school participating in the National School Lunch Program and meets the income requirements for free or reduced-price meals. Families can apply online at ny.gov/SummerEBT before the September 3 deadline.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Food Insecurity

New York State remains committed to addressing food insecurity and supporting low-income families. In addition to the Summer EBT program, the state has delivered $350 million in supplemental Child Tax Credit payments and launched initiatives to make child care more accessible. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to provide financial relief and support the well-being of children across the state.
