Have you ever seen one of those sign markers on the side of the road and wondered what they were?

Typically they're historical markers, but there are a few different categories from cemeteries to historical trails.

Did you know there is a category of historical markers that focus on local legends and lore?

What is the William G. Pomeroy Foundation?

Those historical markers you see are part of the The William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

This organization is has 2 main focuses.

According to their website, they are "committed to supporting the celebration and preservation of community history." Additionally, the foundation also works to improve the "probability of finding appropriate donor matches or other life-saving treatments for blood cancer patients."

Since 2008, they've helped organize hundreds of bone marrow drives and registered more than 30,000 people.

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation launched their first sign program called The New York State Historic Roadside Marker Gran Program, in 2006. Since then, they've funded over 2,600 markers in 49 states.

Along with the historical markers, they've added markers that have a bit more lore to them.

The Legends & Lore Marker Grant Program is "designed to promote cultural tourism and commemorate legends and folklore as part of our heritage."

Legend and Lore markers are filed under 3 categories: Folktale "Fictional stories passed down about people or events not proven to have existed. Legends "Stories passed down that are popularly regarded as historical although not verifiable." and Folklife "Traditions such as music, skills, crafts, and events passed along within a community.
