If you have a gift card to any of these Hudson Valley stores you should use them now before it's too late.

2017 is shaping up to be a terrible year for retail stores. High profile closings seem to be announced everyday. Even if some chains eliminate locations outside the Hudson Valley, those surviving stores in our area may still have their days numbered.

While these locations are still open, and there is no specific information that they may be closing anytime soon, in today's business climate you can never be too careful. So if you have a gift card from the following stores you might want to spend it now.

Abercrombie and Fitch
The 90's clothing giant has seen a decline over the past few years and announced recently that they would be closing 60 locations in 2017. We're not sure if any of them will be in our area, but if you've been to the mall you may have noticed the lack of traffic at Abercrombie. That's probably not a good sign.

Gamestop
The video game retailer announced a few weeks ago that they would be shutting down over 150 stores. The exact locations haven't been announced, but there are several in our area that are located in strip malls that some might not classify as high-traffic locations.

Gander Mountain
The outdoor superstore filed for bankruptcy this year, closing many of their stores. Right now there's no word if the Hudson Valley locations are on the chopping block, but if you have a gift card you might want to grab some gear now before it's too late.

Sears
It seems hard to believe that there may come a time when Sears is no longer in business. But with more closings being announced every few months, the end may be inevitable. The location at the Galleria at Crystal Run was on the last list of closings, who knows which one will be next.

Macy's
The department store giant has been struggling to keep up with online retailers, recently closing three New York locations. The Hudson Valley has been spared for now.

Payless
The shoe store has announced it would close 22 New York locations this year. The company hopes that this will help eliminate some of their debt, but only time will tell. For now, the Hudson Valley locations remain unaffected.

JC Penney
The location in the Palisades Mall has been given its death sentence almost a year after the Kingston location was shut down. For now, Poughkeepsie and Middletown JC Penney locations are safe, but who know for how long.
