Alleged Hudson Valley Drug Dealer Jailed For Fatally Shooting Man In Back
A Hudson Valley man admitted to killing a fleeing man, in what appeared to be a drug deal gone wrong.
On Wednesday in Orange County Court, 25-year-old Fabian Corley of Newburgh was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the shooting death of a man on March 7, on Hasbrouck Street in the City Newburgh.
In August, Corley admitted that he killed 31-year-old Hubert Hines of Newburgh with an illegally possessed hand gun outside his home.
“This case is yet another example that narcotics trafficking invariably leads to violence,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said. “No family should have to grieve for the loss of a loved one killed due to gun violence. This defendant never should have possessed the hand-gun he used, and admitted that he was not acting in self-defense when he killed his victim. Armed narcotics traffickers deserve a lengthy state prison sentences and the community will be safer while this defendant is in prison.”
At the time of his arrest, Corley was charged with possessing cocaine with the intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. A search of his home resulted in the seizure of cocaine, scales and packaging materials commonly used in the sale of cocaine, police say.
Video from a surveillance camera showed that after Corley engaged in what appeared to be a drug deal outside of his home he was approached by a Hines who showed what appeared to be a gun.
Corley pulled out his gun and shot the man in the back as he was fleeing. A pellet gun, which closely resembles an actual hand-gun, was found near the dead man’s body.
In court, Corley admitted that by shooting the man in the back, he wasn’t acting in self-defense.
