The Columbia-Greene Humane Society shared two special updates about a dog that had captured the hearts of the Hudson Valley after she was rescued from unimaginable conditions.

The dog, named Petal, was found in Hudson, NY at the end of July. In the photos described as "graphic" by the Humane Society (below), Petal's severely emaciated condition drew both sympathy for the animal as well as anger aimed at whoever would cause such harm to a helpless creature. Now, an update has provided some answers.

Abandoned Dog in Hudson, NY Makes Miraculous Recovery

The first happy news shared by the CGHS was that Petal had already gained nearly 20 pounds... and that she was officially going home with her brand new owner (below). They also reported that the person believed to be responsible for Petal's earlier condition had been arrested.

Arrest Made in Connection with Neglected Hudson, NY Dog

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society shared that Hudson, NY resident Connell Johnson was arrested in connection with the animal neglect that resulted in Petal's starvation and abandonment. Johnson currently faces a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a fine of $1,000.

Community Reacts to Petal's Recovery

Petal, escribed as a "staff favorite" by the CGHS, also captured the hearts of the Hudson Valley. "So happy to hear this God bless the new owner and everyone who helped her", shared one commenter. "Thank you thank you thank you!! This story broke my heart... I'm also thankful this person is being charged and held accountable", echoed another.
