Breakneck Trailhead Closed for 2 Years Due to Construction
In March of 2025 New York State Parks & Historic Sites made a big announcement regarding one of their more popular hiking trails in Dutchess County.

The reason for the closure?
A construction project called the Breakneck Connector and Bridge was in the works. The construction, according to NY Parks, will make the area safer for hikers and motorist alike. This project will also "bring much-needed improvements such as restrooms and trash and recycling receptacles to the area."
Phase One of Construction Begins on Breakneck Connector Project
It looks like construction officially began back on July 2nd, 2025. In an email sent out by Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail they write "We are excited to announce that work has begun on the Breakneck Connector!"
HHFT adds that traffic barricades are now in place east if Route 9D. They go into detail in the email about what will be done at this site writing
Initial site work also includes improving drainage for storm water management. These first major improvements will lay the groundwork for the new, more organized and safer parking arrangement near the Wilkinson Memorial trailhead.
In other Breakneck Connector construction news, HHFT has introduced a Construction Tracker that they will update regularly with information on the project.
You can find the Construction Tracker at HHFT.org.
