CBS is getting ready to dust off the Star Trek franchise with an all new series. The show will be available exclusively via their CBS All Access service.

The Daily Buzz reports the direct to digital show will debut in January of 2017 and will be produced by Alex Kurtzman. Kurtzman is best known for his work on the movies Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into The Darkness (2013) as well as Transformers (2007) and The Amazing Spider Man 2 (2014).

The show will be entirely new, featuring new characters, aliens and interstellar locations. CBS executives feel it's a good time to bring a new show to the line-up because the original Star Trek celebrates it's 50th anniversary next year.

Critics are not convinced the show will thrive as an online property only. The show will not be shown over the air, strictly via online. A new Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond is due next summer.
