There are multiple versions of an alleged haunting that took place on one Hudson Road, what version of the story do you believe?

It's the time of year where everyone is talking about all kinds of spooky stuff and stories of hauntings. The Hudson Valley is a beautiful, but pretty old area so it's no surprise that a lot of alleged hauntings have happened here. There are so many old homes, even older structures, sad and violent stories about residents ,very old cemeteries and more so it's a good setting for a haunting to take place.

People have very mixed feelings and emotions when it comes to something being haunted. Some people don't believe in any kind of hauntings or ghosts and sometimes I think it's because deep down their afraid to think that can even exists. Other people do believe that ghosts are among us and that they can easily haunt certain areas they've been connected to. I'm a believer of ghosts/places being haunted and have experienced a few things of my own that can't be explained.

I was recently looking up a few hauntings and came across a very creepy story that involves Columbia County....

According to sources, Spook Rock Road (how ironic the word Spook is in the actual name) is haunted. The road is in Hudson/Greenport and runs through various areas of the Hudson Valley. There's even a Spook Rock historical mile marker that can be seen and it helps you know that you are in the right area.

Many people claim this road is haunted, but there are a few versions of the story. Maybe you can help us decide that the truth really is?

Legend of Spook Rock in Columbia County Stories:

So, here's the first version of the Spook Rock Road legend:

Sources say there's a spot/rock on Claverack Creek and this is the final resting spot of two lovers. The story goes that a stunning Mahican maid allegedly fell in love with a young man from an opposite tribe and this defied the wishes of her father. Some people say their forbidden love angered the gods, which caused the creek to flood and killed both of the lovers on the rock. That's a very sad and awful story....

Second version of the Spook Rock Road legend:

Sources say the Lenape Tribe started to settle in the area and a Dutch woman fell in love with with a man from the tribe. Legend has it that the two lovers would meet at Spook Rock (the actual rock), but eventually their love took a very, very dark turn. The woman was allegedly captured and killed by the tribe due to the wrongful actions of her father. Another very sad and awful take on the story.

The versions of the story might be different, but what people have allegedly seen or heard on Spook Rock Road is the same. Many people have reported hearing a woman cry and noticed her wandering down the road looking distressed. Some locals say they believe the ghost of the woman is trying to find her lover. That's just spooky, eerie and very sad. We hope whatever spirit is on Spook Rock Road will find their peace and be able to move on.

We know that legends tend to get changed and many different versions of the story seem to be told. So this is where I'm going to ask you for help, have you heard the legend of Spook Rock Road? Are you from Columbia County and could tell us more about it? Are there evem more versions of the story? Share the details with us on the station app:
