I'm not sure that I could have predicted the day that an announcement about pet medications being available at regular pharmacies would get me excited, but here we are...adulting, am I right?

In an official announcement from CVS Health, it was made public that CVS Health will now carry common prescription meds for dogs and cats at approximately 9,000 locations nationwide.

We’re proud to be a trusted partner in our patients’ health care journeys. With the addition of pet medication dispensing, CVS Pharmacy can now serve every member of the family. Combined with our convenient locations, extended hours, and broad range of health and wellness products, we offer a true one-stop destination for care.

How Does the Pet Prescription Situation Work at CVS?

Similarly to what we do for our own prescriptions, pet owners who are interested in getting their pet meds via CVS need to have a written prescription, or, have their veterinarian contact the pharmacy directly. In-store pickup and home delivery are options, and humans can even manage their pet medications, like for auto-refill, on the CVS app.

Pet owners can add their pets to their CVS.com profile and manage eligible pet prescriptions through the CVS Health app. Additional enhancements to help make the new service even more convenient for pet owners and veterinarians, including electronic prescription capabilities, will be added in the coming months.

While prescription including antibiotics, allergy, flea and tick control, insulin and pain relievers will be available through CVS, additional information and specifics can be found here.

Did you know that CVS Pharmacy stores and CVS.com also have a pet section that includes everyday pet needs as well as care and wellness items? The pet medication announcement also included information that new items will be added to the pet needs section come September.

As easy as the medication process can be with this service, actually administering meds to your pets - that's still on us.
