Propane, oil and diesel fuels are involved in so much of our summer fun — grilling for those amazing get-togethers, the air conditioning that provides a sanctuary from the most scorching days, hot water heaters that help us wash off a long day and so much more.

Any energy source can come with a few unexpected surprises, so our friends at Depew Energy are sharing their top safety tips to ensure your systems stay in top working order:

1) How often should you service your boiler and furnaces?  You should do it once a year. (Pro tip: Set an annual reminder on your electronic calendar or keep the maintenance schedule taped near your boiler or furnace so you don't forget.)

2) What should I do if I smell gas? Propane is highly regulated and has a strong safety record, but if you smell gas you should extinguish any source of ignition (like a cigarette or a candle) and get away from the house as quickly as possible. Close the gas shutoff valve if you can get to your propane tank or cylinder safely, and call Depew Energy and 911 as soon as you and your family are in a safe location. 3) How can I make sure I'm barbecuing safely? Always keep the top open while lighting the grill and don't pour lighter fluid or gasoline onto the grill. You also don't want to store a spare cylinder under or near a grill, or in a shed or garage, as the heat could cause the pressure release valve to release propane and cause a flash fire Review this safety module for more grilling safety information.

4) What do I need to remember about summer storms?  Summer storms can damage your home or cause you to lose power, but you should remember never to store propane cylinders indoors or in an enclosed space like a basement or garage. Similarly, you should not use propane grills inside nor use a gas oven or range-top burner to heat your home. In general, you should know what propane smells like (think rotten eggs or a skunk's spray) and how to turn off the propane to your tank outside and to your appliances inside. To learn more about Depew Energy and the pricing of the day, visit depewoil.com.
