Animal Shelter in Brewster, New York Catches Fire

S.N.A.R.R, Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, in Brewster New York shared details from a devasting night earlier this week.

According to their Facebook page, on the night of June 9th, 2026, they received a phone call that the SNARR shelter was on fire.

SNARR writes:

Instantly, our world changed. The flames spread above our clinic building, threatening the very place that has been a lifeline for so many animals in need.

As soon as the staff and volunteers heard, they raced to the shelter "terrified of what they would find."

The statement explains:

By some miracle, and thanks to the incredible actions of our team, firefighters, and first responders, every single dog and every single person made it out safely.

While the safety and well being of the animals and volunteers is SNARR's first concern, they are now "facing the devastating reality of what comes next."

SNARR Building Destroyed in Late Night Fire

Unfortunately, the building has been "uninhabitable due to extensive water damage from the firefighting efforts."

As firefighters battled the blaze, water "poured through the walls, ceilings, electrical systems and flooring."

The rescue explains that they have 2 buildings where they run the organization out of. There were 8 dogs in the building where the fire occurred.

Those 8 dogs needed to be moved to their other facility, which was "already overflowing."

Needless to say, these additional dogs in the full environment is overwhelming for both the staff and animals.

How Can You Help SNARR After Devasting Fire

While SNARR has insurance, the damage to their building is extensive and expensive and will not cover all the repairs.

SNARR explains that their building was built in the 1920s and to rebuild "portions of it must be brought up to current building codes."

This will cost anywhere between $70,000- $90,000. Factor in that they're still housing and providing care for rescue dogs, those numbers are daunting.

SNARR is asking the public for a little help "For the dogs who still need us."

They write:

Every donation, no matter how small, will help provide care for our displaced animals, cover emergency expenses, and help us rebuild what was lost.

If you're able to help there are a few ways to donate:

  1. You can make a donation on givebutter.com/donatesnarr
  2. Text SNARR to 53-555
  3. Pay-Pal Donations - paypal.me/snarrnortheast
