The Hudson Valley is a dog owner's paradise. With beautiful trails, streams, and parks across the area, residents looking to take their furry friends on adventures are spoiled for choice. Unfortunately, there are some dangers lurking as well.

While the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is normally called to help humans who need emergency assistance, the highly-skilled rangers are trained to help hikers of the four-legged variety as well.

Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails in the Hudson Valley

Many trails in the Hudson Valley are open to well-behaved and leashed dogs, which is the perfect way to describe Hey Hey, a one and a half-year-old Australian Shepherd. A recent hike in Hunter, NY, however, quickly turned into a scary situation.

Hey Hey the Australian Shepherd Rescued from Crevasse in Hunter, NY

As Hey Hey's owner described, the dog attempted to jump across a large gap between two rocks, but the leash wasn't long enough to accommodate the move. The force of the leash being pulled taught forced Hey Hey back into the crevice, where he hung from his collar until it slipped over his head, sending the dog tumbling:

I thought I was never going to see him again... I felt like he was going hundreds of feet into the abyss... [the responding rangers] got there and did everything with his ropes and pulleys and got down there and got my dog. .. it was the best feeling in the world

Describing the Ranger Dawson as "so professional" and "fearless", Hey Hey's owner said "it was the best feeling in the world" to be reunited with her beloved dog. Check out footage of the rescue below.

Heartbreaking Discovery: 5 Dogs Rescued from Barn After Years of Neglect

Five neglected dogs were rescued from a barn in Upstate New York during a foreclosure, where they had been living in filthy, inhumane conditions without sunlight, fresh air, or proper care. Believed to be from a former licensed breeder, the dogs are older, unsocialized, and in poor health, now beginning a long road to recovery with the help of rescuers.
