The remaining half of the new Tappan Zee Bridge has officially opened, despite safety concerns.

According to Westchester Magazine, the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge has officially been opened on the Eastbound side of the bridge. The bridge colloquially referred to as the New Tappan Zee Bridge, is the replacement to the actual Tappan Zee Bridge.

Lohud reports the bridge was partially opened at 10 p.m. Tuesday, September 11 and was fully opened by 2 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Old Tappan Zee Bridge had sustained damage that was causing water traffic delays and delayed the opening of the new bridge. A rusted portion of the bridge had become a safety risk.

Lohud also reports that a joint had reportedly come loose in the old Tappan Zee Bridge, causing the safety concerns and delay of opening the new bridge. Engineers fear the bridge will collapse, but demolition of the bridge is expected to last through the end of 2018.
