Exciting Upcoming Improvements Set to Transform Metro-North Railroad’s Service and Infrastructure
In 2024, Metro-North Railroad has made significant strides in improving its infrastructure, enhancing ridership, and delivering a more reliable, sustainable, and accessible transit system. These efforts are part of a larger initiative backed by the MTA Capital Plan, which includes vital upgrades and climate resiliency measures designed to support future growth and ensure long-term sustainability.
Garrison Station Receives Key Upgrades
One of the key projects is the upgrade to Garrison Station, which includes the replacement of platforms, staircases, railings, tactile strips, expansion joints, and foundation improvements. These enhancements aim to improve safety, accessibility, and overall passenger experience. This is part of a broader initiative to modernize stations across the Metro-North network.
Strengthening Resiliency and Service Reliability
Metro-North is also focusing on the resiliency of its infrastructure, particularly along the Hudson Line, which is vulnerable to coastal surge risk. Upgrades to drainage systems, erosion hotspots, and upland slopes are set to protect over 20 miles of the line. The MTA's commitment to climate resiliency also includes the installation of new state-of-the-art locomotives. The first two of 33 new locomotives were recently delivered, designed to be more environmentally friendly while increasing service reliability.
Improving Accessibility and Expanding Service
Accessibility improvements have been a major focus, with several Metro-North stations becoming fully ADA accessible in 2024. Hartsdale, Scarsdale, and Purdy's stations joined the ranks of 124 accessible stations, further enhancing the transit network's inclusivity. Additionally, service improvements, such as the expansion of the Park Avenue Viaduct and the Penn Station Access project, are helping to accommodate growing ridership and improve connections throughout the region.
Record Ridership and On-Time Performance
These infrastructure improvements come at a time when Metro-North is experiencing strong ridership. With on-time performance at 99% and ridership increasing by 16.2% compared to 2023, Metro-North is exceeding pre-pandemic numbers. In October 2024, the railroad carried 6.5 million riders, reflecting robust growth and the success of these ongoing upgrades.
The MTA’s investment in Metro-North’s future is setting the stage for a stronger, more resilient, and sustainable transportation system that benefits both commuters and the broader New York community.
