Sullivan, the wrestling phenom from the Monroe-Woodbury central school district in Orange County, became the first female wrestler to claim the prestigious title, but there's one more honor that could be in her future as well.
Hudson Valley Eighth-Grader Makes State History
"Gigi Sullivan of Monroe Woodbury makes NYS History!", began a recent post from the New York Women's Wrestling's Facebook page (below). Her win not only secured the Section IX championship, but qualified her to compete for the New York State title.
Orange County, NY Wrestler Headed to States
State wrestling championships will be held in Albany beginning February 28th. Qualifiers from across the state will converge on MVP Arena, and Sullivan will look to secure the state title for the 101-pound division.
Local Wrestler Becomes First Female to Win Male D1 School Title
While Sullivan is not the first female wrestler in New York to win a male title, she is the first to secure the D1 title, which has the largest talent pool in the state due to the size of participating schools.
It "Feels Good" for Local Wrestler to Compete for State Title
In a recent interview (above), Sullivan says it "feels good" to be headed to states, where her brother will also be competing. "I've been working hard all these years and this is something I really wanted to do good in", she shared.
