Hudson Valley Community College Unveils New STEM Education Center
A $17.5 Million Investment in the Future
Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) has proudly announced the opening of its new STEM Education Center at the HVCC North Extension Center in Malta, Saratoga County. This cutting-edge facility, opening for the 2024-25 academic year, represents a significant component of HVCC’s $17.5 million expansion project. Designed to support over 1,000 students annually, the center will offer coursework applicable to more than 30 associate degree and certificate programs, reflecting HVCC’s commitment to advancing education and innovation.
State-of-the-Art Facilities for Diverse Learning
The STEM Education Center, located in NYSERDA’s Saratoga Technology and Energy Park (STEP®), spans 14,500 square feet over two stories. It features modern laboratories for microbiology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and biology, as well as updated classrooms, student support areas, and offices. Additionally, the project includes renovations to the Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies (TEC-SMART), further enhancing facilities for healthcare, STEM fields, and skilled trades.
Strengthening Workforce Development
The new facility is set to expand non-credit, short-term workforce training offerings, addressing regional economic needs and the growing demand for skilled labor. The project has received substantial support, including a $2.5 million Empire State Development grant and significant contributions from SUNY, Saratoga County, and private organizations like GlobalFoundries and the Hearst Foundation. Congressman Paul Tonko played a crucial role, securing $1 million in federal funds to support this initiative.
Local and Statewide Impact
Empire State Development President Hope Knight and SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. both emphasized the center’s role in developing a skilled workforce and meeting New York State's educational needs. Local leaders, including Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman Phil Barrett and GlobalFoundries Vice President Hui Peng Koh, highlighted the project’s potential to drive regional growth and innovation.
