Gas prices in the Hudson Valley are on the decline, reflecting a broader trend across New York State as summer travel wanes and global oil markets fluctuate.

As of Wednesday, the average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in New York was $3.347, down from $3.402 a week earlier and significantly lower than the $3.920 average a year ago, according to AAA data.

This downward trend is welcomed by motorists in the region.

Regional Variations

In the Hudson Valley, some areas have experienced sharper price drops than others. Ulster County boasts an average price of $3.278, which is notably lower compared to Dutchess-Putnam's average of $3.393 and White Plains at $3.493.

This marks a significant decline from last year, when prices were much higher, with Kingston averaging $3.937 and White Plains at $3.968.

Factors Behind the Drop

Nationally, gas prices have fallen approximately 13 percent since their peak in April 2024, aided by a 21 percent decline in Brent crude oil prices over the past year. Weak demand from China and strong supply from U.S. producers have prompted the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to hold off on production increases, contributing to market stabilization.

Future Outlook

Experts predict that gas prices will continue to decrease, provided there are no major disruptions like hurricanes impacting refineries. Additionally, the transition to less-expensive winter fuel blends is further contributing to the drop.
