Police believe a Connecticut man was drunk when he drove into a tree, killing a Hudson Valley man.

On Friday just before midnight, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Patrol responded to a 911 report of a motor vehicle accident on US Route-209 in Summitville.

Arriving officers found a 2003 Lexus sedan which ran off the road and hit a tree, police say.

The Summitville and Wurtsboro Fire Departments responded to the scene and used the Jaws of Life to remove the driver and one passenger from the car.

A front-seat passenger, 26-year-old George W. Williams III, of Wurtsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 21-year-old Luke B. Dardis of Stamford, C.T., was airlifted to Westchester County Medical Center.

He's listed in serious but stable condition, police say.

Police filed a preliminary DWI charge against Dardis, pending the outcome of the full investigation.
