Hudson Valley Milestone: Upgrades for State Route 17

Enhancing Safety and Mobility

A significant milestone has been reached in the environmental review process for a project aimed at upgrading a crucial 30-mile stretch of State Route 17 in Orange and Sullivan Counties. This initiative seeks to improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and provide better access for all users of the transportation system.

Scoping Report Released

The completion of the scoping report marks an important step in this project’s early design and environmental review stages. It evaluates preliminary concepts for improving the roadway and identifies alternatives for further study. Enhancements being considered include adding lanes and constructing new roadways to better manage through traffic. State Route 17 serves as a vital artery connecting the Mid-Hudson, Catskills, and Southern Tier regions.

Community Engagement and Input

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration, has engaged with the public and various stakeholders throughout the scoping process. Two “build” alternatives, alongside a “no-build” option, will be explored further in an upcoming Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) slated for 2025.

Proposed Alternatives

One proposed alternative retains the current two-lane layout while adding interchange auxiliary lanes and new collector-distributor roads. The second alternative suggests a third travel lane from Exit 120 to Exit 130A, along with safety upgrades and improved pedestrian and mass transit accommodations. Key interchanges, including Exit 120, will undergo reconstruction to enhance functionality.
