National One-Hit Wonder Day: Hudson Valley's Favorites

It's time to turn up the volume and dust off the old playlists because September 25 is National One-Hit Wonder Day!

We all have those songs—maybe we don’t admit it out loud, but we know every single word.

Whether it’s that karaoke favorite or a soundtrack to our high school years, one-hit wonders have a way of getting stuck in our heads forever.

Today, we honor those artists who graced us with one magical hit and then... well, faded into musical oblivion.

We asked Hudson Valley residents to share their favorite one-hit wonders, and let’s just say, the responses were chef’s kiss. Here are some of the best:

  • “Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest
  • “Steal My Sunshine” by Len
  • “That Thing You Do” by The Wonders (fictional band, but who’s counting?)
  • “Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum
  • “Hot Child in the City” by Nick Gilder
  • “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye

The thing about one-hit wonders is they never truly go away. Whether you’re reminiscing at a wedding or humming along in the car, these songs stand the test of time…even if their creators didn’t.

Personally, my favorite is “Got You Where I Want You” by The Flys, especially because it brings me back to Disturbing Behavior. It’s a perfect example of how these songs become part of our own soundtracks.

So, what’s your go-to one-hit wonder? Let us know! You can find the full list of Hudson Valley’s favorite picks on our Facebook page
