A Hudson valley teenager is accused of robbing and beating another teenager to death. Officials say he targeted the victim.

In Rockland County Court, Jiwan Coleman, 16, of Spring Valley was charged with 2nd-degree intentional murder, 2nd-degree murder, and robbery.

On June 26 around 11: 45 p.m., 16-year-old Ruben Torres, of Spring Valley was followed by Coleman on his walk home from work in Spring Valley, according to the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.

As the victim continued walking, Coleman allegedly attacked him from behind and hit Torres in the back of the head with a work. When Torres collapsed to the sidewalk Coleman is accused of taking his cell phone, wallet, and then fleeing the scene.

Torres lived in Spring Valley with his father and sister. His mother and brothers live in Guatemala. A GoFundMe page is hoping to raise enough money to ship his body back to his mother in Guatemala.

Dany Marroquin, a 26-year-old from Spring Valley and co-worker of Torres, setup the GoFundMe Page. He said Torres was a “very responsible worker.” Someone who was doing everything he could to become a successful person, going to school in the mornings and night while working in the afternoons.

“This is a truly disturbing case. The defendant is accused of targeting the victim, then savagely attacking him with a rock, knocking him to the ground, rendering him unconscious, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe stated. "The defendant continued his assault on the victim by robbing him and leaving him to die.”

Coleman was remanded to prison in lieu of $3.5 million bail. He faces 25 years to life in prison, if convicted.
