The Hudson Valley region is set to receive a substantial boost in its efforts to enhance water quality and infrastructure, thanks to $30 million in grants from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). This funding, part of a broader $265 million investment by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC), will support 30 communities across the state in tackling critical issues with their drinking water systems.

Federal Funding Targets Lead Service Lines

The $30 million in federal grants will be specifically used to inventory lead service lines in drinking water systems. This crucial first step will enable municipalities to identify and plan for the replacement of outdated and potentially hazardous infrastructure, ensuring safer drinking water for residents.

Financial Assistance for Local Projects

The EFC’s approval also includes low-cost financing and grants to help local governments initiate and complete essential water and sewer infrastructure projects. This financial support is vital for addressing public health risks, environmental concerns, and modernizing aging systems.

Key Projects in the Hudson Valley

Several Hudson Valley towns will benefit from these funds:

  • City of Poughkeepsie: Receives $1.5 million for lead service line inventory and related upgrades.
  • City of Newburgh: Awarded $2 million for comprehensive water system improvements, including lead line replacement.
  • Village of New Paltz: Granted $500,000 for water main replacement and system enhancements.
  • Village of Warwick: Allocated $750,000 for new water treatment facilities and lead line investigations.

Broader Impact on Regional Water Infrastructure

This funding will not only address lead contamination but also support broader infrastructure improvements throughout the Hudson Valley. The investments are part of New York State’s broader commitment to enhancing water quality, with $2.2 billion in financial assistance dedicated to local water projects in the current fiscal year alone.
