Hyundai has announced a nationwide recall of almost 500,000 cars because a defect in the engine manufacturing could cause them to stall.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the recall affects 2011-2012 Hyundai Sonatas with 2-liter or 2.4 liter gasoline engines that were manufactured at an Alabama plant between December 2009 and April 2012.

The recall was issued after it was discovered that metal debris which is normally removed during manufacturing may still be in the engine crankshaft. The debris could then restrict the flow of oil resulting in a possible engine failure. According to the NTSB no injuries have been reported.

Hyundai says it would notify affected owners who could then take their cars for inspection and if necessary the engine assembly would be replaced.

A second recall was also issued by the company for nearly 100,000 2009 to 2011 Hyundai Accents because the brake lights can fail. The recall is an expansion of a recall issued in 2013. Hyundai says the brake light switch can fail, the cruise control may not be deactivated by stepping on the brake, and that the gear shifter may get stuck in the "park" position.

A notice will be sent to all owners affected by either of the recalls beginning November 2nd.
