
Orange County Robbery Suspect Dies While Being Held by Victim
A man has died after allegedly attempting to flee the scene of an armed robbery in Orange County, NY.
A 61-year-old suspect has died after an alleged armed robbery that took place at Ezzie’s Corner Convenience Store in Middletown, NY, on Wednesday.
Armed Robbery in Middletown, NY
According to the City of Middletown Police Department (MPD), the incident began around 7:49 p.m. at Ezzie’s Corner Convenience Store in the area of 130 Wickman Ave in Middletown, NY. Police said that the man entered the store and allegedly demanded money from the clerk while threatening to shoot her if she didn’t comply.
The clerk, a 57-year-old woman, handed over cash from the register before the suspect left the store on foot.
Employee Chases Suspect
As the suspect was leaving, the clerk reportedly realized the suspect didn't have a weapon, and she decided to chase after him in an attempt to stop him from getting away. Police say she was able to catch up with the suspect and grab hold of him, which caused both individuals to fall to the ground in the driveway of 117 Wickham Avenue. The clerk then held the suspect on the ground and began yelling for help.
A witness noticed the struggle and called 911, telling dispatchers that a woman was sitting on top of a man and asking for assistance.
Orange County, NY Robbery Suspect Unresponsive
MPD arrived shortly after, separated the two individuals, and when they checked on the suspect, they discovered that he was unconscious and unresponsive. Police immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR, while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

The suspect, who was not identified, was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Following the incident, police said they believe the suspect became unconscious while being detained and may have suffered a medical emergency, though the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. Detectives are continuing to review surveillance footage and speak with witnesses as the investigation remains ongoing.
