Hunting is something that many people in the Hudosn Valley take very seriously. They get the right tags and permits. They hunt in designated areas. And they make sure to harvest with a conservation mindset.

Unfortunately every year the New York State Department of Environment Conservation (NYSDEC) comes across people who hunt outside the guidelines and sometimes even that law. These hunters may not realize why the restrictions are in place but that doesn't mean that they aren't in trouble with the NYS DEC if they get caught.

Deer Allegedly Taken Illegally Twice in One Week in Deer Park New York

On November 17th Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECO) were called to a scene where an individual had been shooting deer from a car which is illegal in New York State. The Hunter claimed he was trying to take down an injured deer but officers discovered two deer had been shot. Hunting on the road in a vehicle is against the law.

Later that week ECO was called out again this time for baiting and discovered the same individual from earlier in the week was shooting from a window second-floor window. There were no deer discovered at the sight but the hunter was still charged with intentionally feeding deer and hunting with bait.

On November 18th a hunter was stopped heading to the butcher with two deer and a black bear. The People transporting the deer said that the deer were taken by their grandfather. It was early on the opening day of bear and deer season. The ECO was suspicious of how early the time was so they inspected the deer to discover one still had corn in its mouth.

The investigation led to the ECO discovering the property had been baited with goat corn. It was also discovered that five hunters were using their grandfather's tags. The individuals were charged with numerous violations including illegal taking of wildlife, hunting with the aid of bait along with possession of a loaded gun in a motor vehicle.
