A 54-year-old Beacon, New York man has been arrested after he allegedly broke into an area apartment, stole a car, and led police on a foot chase that ended under the Newburgh Beacon Bridge.

On Tuesday, April 16th Beacon Police responded to a call of a possible burglary at Tompkins Terrace apartments in Beacon after witnesses reportedly stopped an unidentified man who was allegedly trying to steal items from an apartment according to a police press release.

The man later identified as 54-year-old Edward Brabham allegedly broke into one of the apartments that was being renovated and tried to walk away with some of its contents. Brabham was stopped by workers at the site returned the items and left the area.

Running Car Stolen

While police were on the scene starting an investigation a City of Beacon Detective Sergeant was flagged down by a woman who told police that her car was just stolen from the area. Police said the victim had left her unoccupied car running in the area of Main Street and South Brett St when a man allegedly jumped in and took off.

A short time later Brabham crashed the car into a light pole on Route 9D in the area of South Ave and was later located by police near 9D near I-84. As police attempted to stop the car Brabham attempted to flee again and quickly crashed into a guard rail on 84 just past the westbound on-ramp.

Foot Chase in Beacon

Before police could get Brabham into custody he attempted to flee the scene by running away and leading police on a foot chase that finally ended underneath the Newburgh Beacon Bridge. Two officers suffered minor injuries from jumping over fences during the chase and were treated and released from nearby St Luke's Hospital.

Edward Brabham was arrested and charged with numerous offenses including Burglary and Grand LAcceny both felonies and five misdemeanors including Resisting Arrest, Reckless Endangerment, Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Obstructing Governmental Administration, and Criminal Mischief.

He was arraigned in Beacon City Court and sent to the Dutchess County Jail due to prior convictions according to police.
