New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a new program offering rebates for buying qualifying lawn equipment.

New York to Offer Rebates For Electric Landscaping Equipment

Governor Hochul has officially signed a bill into law creating a statewide rebate program for electric landscaping equipment. The legislation, A.2657A, is designed to improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and lower greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the voluntary purchase of emission-free landscaping equipment.

The new law allows the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, or NYSERDA, to offer financial incentives at the point of sale for qualifying equipment.

And this program isn't just for commercial landscapers.

In addition to commercial landscaping companies, the rebate program will also be available to state agencies and authorities, local governments, school districts, private schools, universities, and nonprofit organizations.

So, if a local school district, town government, or nonprofit organization needs to replace some of its landscaping equipment, there could eventually be some financial incentive to make the switch to battery-powered equipment.

And there's a pretty long list of equipment that could qualify.

What Landscaping Equipment is Eligible For Rebate?

The program is expected to cover new battery-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers, leaf vacuums, chainsaws, and snow blowers. Related batteries and chargers can also qualify.

The idea is to replace what the state describes as small off-road gas-powered equipment and reduce some of the noise, pollution and other environmental impacts associated with gasoline-powered lawn care machines.

Let's be honest, if you've ever been woken up early on a Saturday morning by someone running a leaf blower outside your house, the "quieter" part of this new program might get your attention too.

Hochul said the new rebate legislation will encourage the purchase of "cleaner and quieter" battery-powered lawn mowers and other landscaping equipment while benefiting communities and small businesses.

However, there is still one pretty important detail that hasn't been decided yet: how much money will actually be available.

How Much Will the Rebates Be?

The new law does not establish the total budget for the rebate program or set specific rebate amounts for individual pieces of equipment. Those details will be determined by NYSERDA through a forthcoming rulemaking process.

That means businesses, schools, municipalities, and other eligible organizations will have to wait a little longer to find out exactly how much they could receive when purchasing new electric landscaping equipment.

Once the program is established, the incentives are expected to be offered at the point of sale, making the rebate available when qualifying equipment is purchased.
