Do smokers pay more in New York than any other state in the country?

If you or someone you know is a smoker you probably already know that smoking cigarettes is an expensive thing to do but did you know that New York has just been named the most expensive state for smokers?

Most of us are well aware that smoking is one of the worst things you can choose to do to yourself. The long-lasting health effects of smoking for an extended period can be deadly not only to you but to anyone who's around you when you light up due to secondhand smoke. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that tobacco use accounts for nearly half a million deaths in the U.S. every year so it's not something anyone should do! Unfortunately, some of us still choose to smoke but did you that if you live in New York you are paying more for smoking than smokers anyone else?

How Much Does Smoking Cost?

To try and convince smokers to try and quit the folks at Wallet Hub conducted a new study to identify which state is the most expensive for smokers. The new study used numerous factors to find the true per-person cost of smoking in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The weighed factors like the yearly and lifetime cost of a pack of cigarettes per day, potential monetary losses, health care expenditures, and other costs that could be brought on by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.

New York Smokers Pay More Than Any Other State

New York takes the top spot on this year's list taking the #1 spot in many of the categories used including shelling out around $4,700 every year for tobacco products. If you extend those figures over a lifetime of smoking it will cost a New York smoker around $226,000 in cigarettes alone. The healthcare costs of smoking in New York annually total over $5,700 and extended over a lifetime, the numbers jump to over a quarter of a million dollars with healthcare complications costing an average New York smoker around $275,000. After weighing all factors Wallet Hub has determined that the average New York smoker will incur a staggering cost of nearly $5.2 million over a lifetime.

Most Expensive States for Smokers

Rhode Island, Connecticut Maryland, and the District of Columbia rounded out the top five most expensive states for smokers. The least expensive states include North Dakota, North Carolina, Alabama, Missouri and Mississippi.
