What is an Advent Calendar
So what is an Advent Calendar? According to Christmas Central, an Advent Calendar is a display with windows or doors usually numbered 1 to 24 representing the days leading up to Christmas December 25th.
Some calendars are as simple as paper wall hangings which have something printed behind each number. Others can be large and behind each number is a treat or a treasure. Of course, there are many variations in between.
What is the Origin of the Advent Calendar?
Again I lean into Christmas Central and their information which claims that Advent can be traced to as far back as the 4th Century. However, the more modern days use which they link to the mid-1800s saw Geman families marking the days until Christmas with chalk on a wall which eventually led to the printed version of the calendar.
